Ingredient Close Up: What Is Enzogenol® & What Can It Do For Me?

Radiata Pine

Enzogenol® is one of the main ingredients in 55+ and it’s an exciting supplement for our brains and hearts.

The more research it undergoes, the more benefits its shown to have.

We’ve included it in 55+ because – at any stage of life but particularly post-menopause – our brain and heart need extra support. Researching the best partners for this we discovered Enzogenol®. An ingredient that’s packed with highly concentrated plant compounds called flavonoids. These flavonoids have been shown to boost the body’s antioxidant defences and help its natural healing processes.

Where does Enzogenol® come from?

Enzogenol® is a plant extract derived from the bark of New Zealand Pinus radiata trees. It’s extracted using an environmentally friendly water-only process.

A Short Lesson On Free Radicals & Antioxidants

Antioxidants are crucial to our health and reduce cellular damage. As we age, and as we’re exposed to more and more toxins, stress and ill health, free radicals are formed. Free radicals are like little gremlins that have the ability to  create oxidative stress. Antioxidants are super powered ‘wellness warriors’ that have the ability to neutralise free radicals.

Oxidative stress is a major player in the formation and progression of disease. It also plays an large role in the ageing process. In times of oxidative stress, the body can be overwhelmed by free radicals. As a result, damaged cell molecules and cellular function can occur. In addition, increased inflammation which contributes to chronic disease and ageing may result.

Are you with me so far? I’m attempting to keep it as simple as possible because the science-y stuff can cause cases of eye glazing. Lol!

What Are The Benefits Of Taking Enzogenol®?

The current research shows Enzogenol ® supports brain, heart and eye health.

Brain Health

Indeed, Enzogenol® has been found to be beneficial to the brain particularly in relation to memory and cognition. In addition, one of the studies showed it has a calming effect (we like that). Studies link.

Heart Health

Nutritional research shows that when it comes to cardiovascular health Enzogenol® supports healthy blood vessels, blood viscosity and blood pressure. Studies link.

Anti-Ageing

You’ve heard of telomeres? They sit on the ends of chromosomes and look similar to the cap ends of shoelaces. These ‘caps’ shorten with age and some studies are showing that Enzogenol® can reduce the occurrence of this action. Studies link.

Overall Benefits

All in all, the compounds in Enzogenol® are on a par with the wonderful health benefits of a whole foods plant-based diet. One packed with fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds. So by supplementing with it daily, you’re donning a suit of armour. Studies link.

Great News!

Isn’t that great news? Especially those of us who are forgetting why we’ve walked into a room or feel bouts of frequent brain fog! And do you agree a calmer brain sounds like heaven? I don’t know about you but improvements in cognition and alertness are definitely on my wishlist.

The antioxidant power of Enzogenol® is something to be revered. Remember the lesson we had in free radicals and oxidative stress? While those things attack our DNA, antioxidants act like the defence warriors and do battle with them. Accordingly, the more protected our DNA is the healthier we are.

Post-menopause

This is the time when menstruation is well and truly over, the ovaries have stopped producing high levels of sex hormones and for many ladies, perimenopause symptoms subside.

Estrogen has protective qualities and the diminished levels mean organs such as your brain, heart and bones become more vulnerable. It’s also a key lubricant so your lips may become drier, your joints less supple and your vagina might be drier. In addition, your thyroid, digestion, insulin, cortisol and weight may alter.

At this juncture, a woman might experience an increase in the signs of reduced estrogen but she should have a decrease of perimenopause symptoms. That said, some women will experience symptoms like hot flushes for years or even the rest of their lives.

Perimenopause

Peri = ‘near’

Most females begin to experience the symptoms of perimenopause in their mid-forties. Your progesterone levels decline from your mid-30s but it’s generally from around 40 that the rest of your sex hormones begin to follow suit.

Perimenopause is a different experience for every woman and some women may barely notice it. The first indicators are usually changes to the monthly cycle. This means that for some ladies, this can be accompanied by things like sore breasts, mood swings, weight gain around the belly, and fatigue as time goes on.

For those with symptoms it can be a challenging time physically, mentally and emotionally.

Importantly, perimenopause lasts – on average – four to 10 years. The transition is usually a gradual process and many women enter perimenopause without realising.
